CPR & First Aid - 2018 Updates

Important Dates

  • July 1, 2018 - A new CPR/First Aid Policy will go into effect July 1, 2018.  A copy of the policy is available on the Form Drive within the Safety Folder.
  • June 20, 2018 – Will be sending out a questionnaire to determine if any sites/trainers need additional help with ordering supplies.  Look for that email.  We will be assisting in the ordering process to include a bulk order on June 26, 2018.
  • June 25, 2018 at 2:00 pm – Will be hosting a Training Webinar for Instructors and Training Coordinators.  Register here

The Change in RHA's CPR and First Aid

  • RHA will begin certifying both licensed healthcare workers and non-licensed workers with the American Heart Association Basic Life Support Standards in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.  For regulatory purposes, Tennessee will continue to use LifeSaver.
  • It will prove more effective, more consistent, more cost-efficient, and more inclusive of the individuals we all work with daily.
  • RHA has written and implemented its own approved First Aid Course that will be taught before or in conjunction with the BLS CPR class.
  • All Instructors have been notified and should be involved at the point of preparation to include:  supply inventory, ordering and purchasing of new supplies required, reviewing the training manuals to ensure the instructors are comfortable and prepared to teach the BLS curriculum.

  • Annual Refresher - Identified staff will complete a RHA generated CPR and First Aid refresher course annually, including a skills checklist.  These are available via CBT and classroom instruction.
  • CPR For Specific Positions - All staff are no longer required to become CPR certified.  (See policy for list of employees required to obtain CPR certification)
  • Accepting Certification of New Hires - We will accept AHA/American Red Cross certifications equivalent to BLS/Heart Saver from new hires.  (Will complete the refresher course annually and obtain AHA BLS on expiration of current certification

Recommended by RHA Nursing due to pricing

What To Order

Item 15-1077 Basic Life Support Instructor Package
This includes your Instructor Manual, DVDs, Re-Cert info…everything you will need to conduct the class.  Should only need 1.

Item 15-1010 Basic Life Support Provider Manuals
Most places are ordering 6 to 8. You can have no more than 8 people in a class. The manuals are used during the class and returned to the instructor at completion).

Infant CPR Training Manikin
You should already have Adult Mannequins in place.  Most places are ordering 1 to 2. Only one person at a time can show the skills checkoff, so you do not need one infant mannequin per person. Also, order the training edition. You do not need a real time infant mannequin.

Ambu Bag (Bag Valve Mask Resuscitator)
You may need to order 1 of these, as it was not required in Heartsaver, but optional for use. You will probably need an infant size. Most places probably already have this in use.
