What is blood glucose?

Glucose is the main source of energy for the body’s cells.

Insulin is a hormone that is produced in the pancreas and serves to transport the glucose into your body’s cells.

When the level of glucose in your blood rises, insulin is released to circulate the glucose throughout the body. Blood glucose levels that remain high over time can damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels.


What can I do to improve my blood glucose levels?

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) suggests that people with diabetes adhere to high-fiber, low-calorie diets.

High-fiber complex carbohydrates can be found in vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grain breads and cereals. Having some lean protein (chicken, nuts, low fat cheese) with each meal and snack will also help with blood glucose control.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you should consult with your doctor and adjust your diet to what is right for you based on the recommendation of your physician and your blood sugar levels.
